SMARTBOX will develop an advanced computational engineering platform specifically for oxidative enzymes. Relying on this platform, SMARTBOX will develop the one-enzyme conversion of HMF into FDCA and intermediates, and the one-enzyme conversion of lignin monomers into a potential biobased building block for polycarbonates and vanillin.

FALCON Workshop @ BBEPP: Lignin Valorization towards fuels, chemicals and materials

The FALCON project ( on valorization of lignin which is the most recalcitrant component in plant biomass. As biorefinery strategies for biomass treatment and its upgrading are essential to realize viable processes, the FALCON consortium decided to organize a one-day Workshop with experts in the field.

Falcon: Fuel And chemicals from Lignin through enzymatic and chemical CONversion.
FALCON aims to convert this lignin-rich industrial waste of 2G biofuel plants to higher value products, in particular shipping fuels, fuel additives and chemical building blocks. This would be the next consecutive step in turning waste to products, thus minimizing waste and simultaneously providing new alternatives for fossil resource based processes.
