Building new demonstration equipment for the development of industrial biotechnology as Key Enabling Technology for sustainable chemistry.
ERDF Flanders and Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP) signed an agreement for an investment of €9,36 million in the frame of the IMPACT project. This investment is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Flanders, the Province of East-Flanders, the City of Ghent and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant. The financing will be used to build up new research infrastructure specifically for gas fermentation and Down-Stream Processing.
Gas fermentation is an innovative and sustainable technology with enormous potential in terms of carbon footprint reduction. It uses micro-organisms to convert waste gasses such as CO2 and syngas into a wide spectrum of chemicals. Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant will build a unique scale-up facility for gas fermentation with the aim to expand into a global reference for gas fermentation and to make Flanders thé testing ground for this sustainable technology. Down-Stream Processing comprises the isolation and purification of a product after a biotechnological or chemical conversion step. This investment will also enable Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant to enlarge its Down-Stream Processing capacity at high TRL (Technology Readiness Level) level, allowing the pilot facility to use the full potential of its 15m3 fermenters.

Opbouw van nieuwe demonstratie apparatuur voor de ontwikkeling van industriële biotechnologie als sleuteltechnologie voor duurzame chemie
EFRO Vlaanderen en Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP) ondertekenden een overeenkomst voor een investering van 9,36 miljoen EURO in het kader van het IMPACT project. Deze investering wordt gedragen door het Europees Fonds voor Regionale Ontwikkeling (EFRO), Vlaanderen, de Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, de Stad Gent en de Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant. Hiermee zal nieuwe onderzoeksinfrastructuur worden opgebouwd, specifiek voor gasfermentatie en Down-Stream Processing.
Gasfermentatie is een nieuwe duurzame technologie om afvalgassen zoals CO2 en syngas met behulp van micro-organismen om te zetten naar een brede waaier aan chemische stoffen. Het is een technologie met een groot potentieel op vlak van ‘carbon footprint’ reductie. De Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant zal een unieke opschalingsfaciliteit voor gasfermentatie uitbouwen, om uit te groeien tot een wereldwijde referentie inzake gasfermentatie, en van Vlaanderen de proeftuin te maken voor deze duurzame technologie. Down-Stream Processing omvat de isolatie en opzuivering van het eindproduct na de biotechnologische of chemische conversiestap. De Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant bouwt hiermee zijn Down-Stream Processing capaciteiten op hoog TRL (Technology Readiness Level) niveau verder uit. Dit zal toelaten om het potentieel van de fermentoren tot 15m3 ten volle te benutten.
